42 Loosening wheel bolts on rear axle

Condition

When loosening the wheel bolts on the rear axle, it is apparent that they are difficult to loosen or fit. Damage may occur to the locating bolt of the brake disc.

Technical Background

When lifting the vehicle, axle kinematics cause torque to be applied to the drive shaft. If the transmission parking lock and the parking brake are applied, the torque may result in tension between the wheel bolts and the brake disc.

To avoid damage, please observe the instructions in the Workshop Manual and the Service TV explanation video (STV_0795).

The parking brake must be released when loosening wheel bolts (“Ensure ability to roll”).
